Gender & Mental Health: Cross-Cultural Focus in Provence, France

Course Overview:
This course will explore the relationship between gender and mental health.  Topics to be discussed include gender identity, gender differences in development throughout the lifespan, the impact of social and societal gender expectations on functioning, as well as gender differences in the response to trauma and victimization.  The course will also include an in-depth examination of sex differences in clinical disorders such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, and personality disorders.
Course Goals & Outcomes:
At the end of this course, students should:
Understand the impact of gender and culture on development across the lifespan
Demonstrate knowledge of gender and cultural differences in the eused in America) and ICD (used in Europe)
Be familiar with several psychological disorders, as well as current treatments available for these disorders both in the US and in Europe 

Target Audience:
This course is ideal for a wide range of students.  It is approved for credit for the psychology major and the psychology minor, as well as for the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies minor.  This course is also approved for Social & Behavioral Science core credit.  It is also an excellent course for any student interested in a career in mental health or allied fields, for example clinical, counseling, or school psychology; psychiatric nursing; social work; physical therapy; occupational therapy; medicine; marriage and family therapy; clinical mental health counseling; applied-behavior-analysis; and child life.
