About Brisbane

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and is Australia's third largest city. Lying at the heart of the most diverse and popular vacation region in Australia, Brisbane has a desirable subtropical climate with moderate winters and pleasant summers. The city's imposing skyline rises above the Brisbane River to reveal a vibrant cosmopolitan center. The city caters to all tastes with its buzzing cultural and social scene, and outdoor lifestyle centered on scenic river walks, gardens and wildlife parks. Excellent public transportation allows students to explore nearby cities, beaches and islands.

The Campus

Australian Catholic University (ACU) consists of seven campuses spread out across the country. The Brisbane Campus (McAuley at Banyo) has more than 5,200 students, including over 400 international students. ACU is Australia's leading Catholic university and is supported by more than 2,000 years of Catholic intellectual tradition. As a member of the International Federation of Catholic Universities, ACU is devoted to communicating truth in every field of knowledge through teaching and research, as well as promoting the dignity of all people and the common good.


Students will have a comprehensive orientation upon arrival at ACU. Information regarding course registration, student safety, sports clubs and societies, student health, library services, etc. will be provided. Students will also be given a city and campus tour.


ACU has a variety of courses in which students can enroll. Students must be academically engaged four days a week. Students have a choice of taking four courses, four credits each, for a total of sixteen credits or students can take three courses, four credits each, in addition to taking a four credit internship.  

The typical semester at ACU runs from July - November (Fall semester) and from February - June (Spring semester).

ACU will publish their courses prior to the start of the semester; however the time codes associated with the courses will not be released until orientation. After students are approved to study abroad with ACU by Fairfield University, students will submit pre-registration list which will be forwarded to ACU. Students will finalize their courses during orientation.

Students who participate on this program will receive a Fairfield transcript and letter grades upon successful completion from their semester abroad.

Students will live in fully furnished apartments located 45-50 minute train ride from campus . The apartment complex, Urbanest, accommodates four to six students per apartment. Students will each have a private bedroom and bathroom with shared common and kitchen space. Students may request to be placed with one other student on the Fairfield program and will be placed with other students living in the facility.  Urbanest will provide students with Wi-Fi, cooking utensils, crockery, linens, a pillow and towel upon arrival. Urbanest also has laundry machines in the complex, fully equipped gym, game room, and more!

United States citizens studying abroad in Australia are required to obtain a visa prior to arrival in country. Visas must be obtained online through the Australia governments website found here:
Detailed information on how to apply will be found in students studioabroad accounts after they have been approved to study abroad.

Students are responsible for obtaining all necessary documentation and for applying for their own visa.

Application Procedures and Deadlines

In order to participate in this program, each student must first complete all application requirements at their home university. Each university has different application requirements so be sure to speak to your study abroad advisor.

After the initial application has been processed by the Study Abroad Office, students will receive an e-mail regarding their application status and instructions on the next steps.

Students applying to study abroad at ACU must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 as well as meet the remaining Fairfield University study abroad approval requirements. This program is competitive and applicants are expected to exhibit a high level of maturity, independence, and seriousness of purpose.

Program Fees and Cancellation

Semester program cost includes

•           Insurance, including full medical coverage and medical emergency evacuation

Program Cancellation

Students are required to submit a non-refundable $1,000 deposit for their program after committing to going abroad for a semester or summer, and are subject to a cancellation fee if they withdraw from the program after the deposit deadline. The deposit is part of the students overall tuition and will be reflected on their invoice.The Deposit Deadline is as follows:
  • Fall/Year: April 1
  • Spring: October 1

The amount of the cancellation fee will be determined by the Fairfield University Office of Study Abroad after a review is conducted of the non-refundable expenses that have already been incurred. These direct non-refundable expenses will begin to incur as soon as commitment is made to the study abroad program; they may include tuition, housing, and orientation fees. The cancellation fee may be as high as $12,000 or more.

All participating students are automatically enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) health insurance for the duration of their study abroad program. This insurance is included in the program fee, and there is no additional cost to the student. This coverage should not replace your primary insurance.

Fairfield University requires that all travel done independently from the program be registered with CISI for emergency purposes. Independent travel can be registered by logging into individual CISI accounts. Students will be able to log-in once insurance cards are issued (within a month of departure).
